Here are some of the basics about the healthcare system in the UK. Read here for Dr Chu’s view on the NHS and health insurance as a Hong Kong doctor who worked in both Hong Kong and the UK.

IHS

You can get any healthcare you need from the NHS on a BNO visa. The cost is included in the visa application fee as an ‘Immigration Health Surcharge’. This is will be £621 per person when the BNO visa process officially starts from January 2021.

The BNO visa gives you a biometric residence permit, which you should take with you when you access NHS services (although they probably will not check).

You will get whatever healthcare you need. There are still charges for some things like prescription drugs, dental care, optical care, etc.

What is a GP

A local doctor is called a GP, which means General Practitioner. One or more GPs will work together in a local office called a surgery.

Once you are in the UK you can find the local GP’s surgeries in your area and contact them to ask if you can register. They will accept you unless they are over capacity or there is some health reason why not.

The process involves filling in this form. The only important parts are your name, address, and date of birth. They ask for a proof of address, like a utility bill, but it is not essential to begin the process and have a first meeting with a doctor.

Once you are registered you can book an appointment online or on the phone. If you need to go to a hospital, your GP will refer you.

Private Health Insurance

Most people find NHS care is enough, but some people pay for private health insurance on top. It can be a good idea if you want treatment more quickly or if you want to choose your doctor for example. Some well known services are BupaVitalityAviva and Saga and there are various companies reselling insurance.

Private Doctor Consultation

Pricing varies, but a private doctor consultation is generally £200-300 each time. Physiotherapy is around £50-70 per session.
